FAQs

Over the course of 12 weeks (with a week break for half term, students will form a band of their own, and with the help and tuition of Crank's expert tutors, will put together a setlist of 6 songs of their own choosing, learning and rehearsing them to perform at a real live show on the final day of the course.

How long will the sessions be?

RockLab sessions are scheduled to run for 90 minutes.

How much will it cost?

The cost is £25 per session.

How do I sign up?

Fill in the form above, and before term starts we’ll organise everyone into groups based on age, ability level, and preferred music style, and send emails out to everyone involved to confirm availability and a place on the course.

How good do I have to be?

Anyone from beginners to advanced players can sign up, and we’ll try to match you with other people around your level of experience. All we ask is that feel confident playing in time and understanding tab, chord diagrams, or sheet music, along with the basics of your instrument and how to tune up. The tutors will arrange the songs in a way that suits your level.

Can I join with a friend?

Absolutely! As long as both of you are confident with the basics as described above, then make sure you let us know when you’re getting in touch to book a place that you’re looking to join the same band and we’ll make it happen.

What songs will we be playing?

When we email you confirming you place in a RockLab band, we ask you for 5 song choices, and on week 1 of the run, we’ll go through everyone’s list with the band and pick out the songs we want to learn from that pile. We make sure everyone gets at least one song from their list in our final setlist, so YOU pick the songs!

Can I bring a Brother/Sister/Grandma/Auntie/Friends/Embarrassing Uncle to the gig?

YES! There’s no show if there’s no audience! Tell your friends and family and turn up to show your support and see their hard work come together. We’ll make some posters during the course and get the band to invite folks so they can show off their moves. We’ll be taking some pictures and video for people to take home after the gig so you relive the epicness.

Do I need a ticket for the gig?

No, the final show is free and open to the public, bring as many people as you like! We'll distribute the photos from the gig for free also via email once all the necessary edits etc have been done.

Do I need to bring my own gear?

You can do, but generally, no. Obviously if you’re a guitarist maybe you prefer your own guitar and don’t want to have to borrow one every week, but we’ve got all the equipment we need already here and set up, so don’t worry about having to bring in huge amps or an entire drum kit every week!

Can I join if I play an instrument that isn’t on the list?

You’re welcome in a band playing any instrument, and if the original song doesn’t have a part for saxophone/marimba/flute or whatever you play, then our tutors will write one that fits the song.

What’s expected of me if I sign up?

Everyone in the band is working together, so it’s important to understand that if you sign up:

1: You’ll be here for all of the rehearsals and the gig

Goes without saying that you shouldn’t sign up if you’re going to be away on the day of the gig! Check all the dates on the schedule before signing up and make sure you’re not going to be away for many of the dates. Missing one or two practices isn’t the end of the world, but it’ll mean there’s catching up to do to avoid letting other band members down.

2: You’re happy with photos being taken of the show

We’re gonna be trying to capture the magic of the show with photographers, and other folks are likely to want to take videos on their phones etc. If you have issues with this (for safeguarding or privacy reasons), then discuss it with us beforehand, but be aware that it’s extremely likely that pictures and videos will be taken at the event.

3: You Practise!

We’ll be making sure you have everything you need to learn the songs, but if you don’t practise them at home, you’re gonna struggle to play them on stage when the time comes. Make sure you’re gonna have time to go over the songs between sessions and have them ready for rehearsal.

4: The rehearsal is for the band and tutors only

Whilst some parents and guardians like to sit in on instrumental lessons, this isn’t possible during band sessions. If everyone chose to, we’d have no space, and the social aspect of the band is as important as the musical aspect (having one parent always sitting in tends to create an awkward vibe!). Again, if you have issues or extenuating circumstances, then get in touch beforehand with Crank and make sure terms are agreed to before signing up.

We’re all super excited to start. The guitars have been restrung, the drums have been tuned, and the amps are all Cranked up to 11 (see what we did there?). See you in the moshpit! 🤘
